Start with one question, because it decides your budget faster than any quote will. Does the product exist yet, and how many images do you actually need? If you can put the product on a table today and you need one good picture of it, book a photographer. Product photography in Dubai starts from around AED 50 an image in our own published pricing, and no computer-generated image is going to beat that for a single shot [11]. CGI earns its cost somewhere else.
This guide is for the marketing lead who has to make that call and then defend it. It covers what we charge for 3D product animation and CGI stills, how the production pipeline actually spends money, why a change requested late costs far more than the same change requested early, and what the rules say about renders used to market property in Dubai.
One warning before the numbers. There is no independent price list for CGI production. Every page promising the true cost of a 3D render is published by a studio that sells 3D renders. So every CGI price in this guide is our own, and it is labelled as ours.
CGI vs product photography: which should you choose?
Choose CGI when the product does not exist yet, when you need many variants, when you must show the inside, or when the camera move is impossible.
- The product does not exist yet. Pre-launch, pre-order, crowdfunding, tooling not finished. There is nothing for a camera to point at, so the comparison ends there.
- You need many variants. Twelve colourways, four finishes, three pack sizes. Once one model is built, each variant is a material swap rather than a new shoot.
- You need to show the inside. Cutaways, exploded views, and how-it-works sequences. A camera cannot see into a sealed housing without destroying a unit.
- The camera move is impossible. Flying through a mechanism, orbiting a component at macro scale, floating parts in mid air. No rig, drone, or motion-control track gets you there.
A photo shoot wins everywhere else, and it is worth saying that plainly. For one hero shot of a product that already exists and already looks good, photography is faster, cheaper, and lower risk. A camera captures real material behaviour for free. The actual drape of a fabric, the actual wear on a leather strap, the tiny imperfections that make an object read as real, all arrive in the file without anyone building them. In CGI, every one of those details is somebody's afternoon.
The honest rule of thumb: the crossover point is volume and reuse, not image quality. One image of a real product means book a photographer. Many images, an unbuilt product, or an internal view means CGI. Our product photography cost guide covers the shoot side in detail.
What 3D product animation and CGI cost in Dubai
CGI stills start from around AED 2,500, additional angles or colourways from around AED 500 each, and 3D product animation from around AED 10,000 per finished minute. These are our own figures, not a market survey. Final pricing depends on scope.

The shape of that table is the whole argument. The first render carries the cost of building the model, the materials, and the lit scene. The tenth render carries almost none of it. If you plan a brief that produces one image, you pay full price for a build you then throw away. If you plan a brief that produces fifteen images from the same build, the average cost per image falls sharply.
Note also that the AED 10,000 figure is per finished minute, not per project. You are quoted against the length of the delivered video, because the cost lives in building and calculating every frame of it. A thirty-second piece is not half the work of a sixty-second one, since the model, materials, and lighting have to be built either way. Why the first render costs far more than the tenth
The first render pays for building the model, the materials, and the lit scene, and every later image reuses that build. Here is the pipeline in plain language.
1. Reference and source files. The job starts with whatever you can supply. CAD files, a physical sample, drawings, spec sheets. Autodesk documents this kind of pipeline integration, where existing engineering geometry is imported and prepared before modelling begins [1]. If good CAD exists, this stage is short. If it does not, an artist rebuilds the shape from photographs and measurements, which is slower and less exact.
2. Modelling. Building the 3D geometry itself. Autodesk positions 3ds Max specifically for detailed architectural and product models [1]. This is bespoke, one-off work per product, and it is the first of the two expensive stages.
3. UV unwrapping. The 3D surface is unfolded into a flat layout, like cutting a cardboard box along its seams and laying it out. That layout is what lets flat artwork, labels, and patterns wrap onto the model without stretching.
4. Texturing and materials. Turning grey geometry into brushed steel, matte plastic, or worn leather by setting colour, roughness, bump, and reflectivity. Adobe notes in its Substance 3D documentation that skin, fur, fabric, and metal each need different treatment to interact with light believably [2]. This is hand-tuned per product, and it is the second expensive stage.
5. Look development and lighting. Building the lighting rig in software and checking the materials under it. This is the software version of a photographer's studio setup, and it is the last cheap moment to change your mind.
6. Animation, where the deliverable is video. Keyframing camera moves, product motion, or an exploded sequence across time.
7. Rendering. The computer calculates the finished images. Chaos, the maker of the V-Ray renderer, documents render time as proportional to scene complexity, the number of samples, and the total pixel count [3]. For animation, that cost repeats for every frame, and finished video runs at roughly 24 to 30 frames a second.
8. Compositing. Combining rendered layers such as reflections and shadows, adding backgrounds, grading colour, and outputting final files.
Stages two and four are where the money goes, and neither of them has to be repeated for a second image of the same product. That is why the first render is expensive and the tenth is not.
Rendering compute has a price. Everything else does not
One part of this pipeline does have a published, non-studio price. Chaos Cloud, the official cloud rendering service from the company behind V-Ray, sells rendering by credit, from about 0.75 US dollars per credit on small packages down to about 0.55 on the largest, with licensing, upload, download, and storage included [5].
Read that for what it is: the cost of the electricity and machines, not the cost of a finished production. The modelling, the materials, the lighting, and the art direction all sit on top of it, and those are the parts nobody publishes a rate card for.
Why a late change costs more than the same change made early
A late change costs more because the pipeline stacks, so one request after lock means redoing geometry, materials, lighting, and every frame.
A change at the brief stage costs nothing, because nothing has been built. A change after modelling means redoing geometry, and nothing has been layered on top of it yet, so the damage stops there. The same change after lighting and animation are locked means redoing the geometry, then rebuilding the materials on the new geometry, then re-checking the lighting, then rendering every frame again. It is the same request, but now four stages of work have to be repeated instead of one.
So build your review points into the schedule deliberately. Approve the model before texturing starts. Approve materials and lighting on a single test frame before animation begins. Those two approvals are cheap and they protect the expensive part of the project. A vague sign-off at the start followed by detailed opinions at the end is the most expensive way to run a CGI job, and it happens constantly.
What pushes the price up
- Model complexity. More parts, more surface detail, more moving components. This is bespoke labour and it is the biggest single driver.
- Whether CAD exists. Supplying accurate engineering files removes most of the guesswork from modelling.
- Hard materials. Glass and liquid depend on caustics, the focused light patterns that appear when light bends through a transparent surface, and viewers instantly read approximated caustics as fake. Skin, wax, and marble need subsurface scattering, where light enters a surface, bounces beneath it, and re-emerges. Chaos describes simulating that accurately as computationally very expensive [4]. Fabric needs fine weave and sheen detail. These four categories are the demanding ones.
- Length, for animation. Every extra second is a full set of frames to calculate.
- Resolution and frame rate. Both increase the amount of calculation. Neither has a published multiplier, so treat them as directions, not formulas.
- Number of variants. Cheap relative to the first build, but not free. Each one still needs setup and render time.
Stills, animation, and the real-time question
A still is one calculated image. A second of animation is 24 to 30 of them, plus the artist time to animate the motion. That gap is why stills are quoted per image and animation per finished minute, and why it is usually smart to commission stills and animation from the same build rather than as two separate projects.
There is a third option worth knowing about. Real-time rendering, the technology behind product configurators and virtual showrooms, calculates images fast enough to stay interactive. Epic Games documents real-time ray tracing in Unreal Engine for this kind of work [6]. Offline rendering, by contrast, takes as long as each frame needs and prioritises quality. If you want shoppers to spin and recolour a product on your website, that is a real-time build, and it is a different job from a cinematic hero film. CGI for property marketing in Dubai
Property is where renders do the most selling, because off-plan units cannot be photographed at all. Two things are worth knowing.
First, what we could not find. We found no Dubai Land Department or RERA rule specific to CGI, or to how realistic versus schematic a marketing render must be. If someone tells you such a rule exists, ask them to show you it.
Second, what does apply. Property advertising needs a valid Trakheesi advertising permit before publication, and off-plan advertisements must disclose the developer name, the escrow account number, the expected completion date, and proposed service fees [7]. Separately, UAE consumer protection law prohibits advertising that creates an untrue or misleading impression on the consumer, and that covers imagery regardless of whether it was photographed or rendered [8] [9]. So the exposure from a render showing a view or a finish that will not be delivered is the same exposure a doctored photograph would carry. Requirements change, so confirm the current position directly with the Dubai Land Department before you publish.

Do you need a filming permit for CGI?
Pure CGI involves no location, no crew, and no camera, so a filming permit would not normally be in scope. Treat that as the sensible reading rather than a guarantee, and confirm it with the Dubai Film and TV Commission if the project matters [10]. The moment any part of the job involves a live shoot, whether that is reference photography of a real sample on location or live plates for CGI to sit on top of, the permit question returns in full. Real client stories
These are real situations from projects we have worked on. Names and details have been changed.
The one where photography was the right answer. A homeware brand asked for CGI stills of a ceramic range that was already sitting in their warehouse. They needed one clean image per product for a marketplace listing. We told them to book a photographer instead. Modelling forty pieces of glazed ceramic to produce forty single images would have cost many times a straightforward packshot session, and glaze is exactly the kind of surface a camera renders better than software does for free.
The launch that had nothing to photograph. A hardware startup needed launch imagery eight weeks before the first production unit existed. We built the model from their CAD files and produced hero stills, colourway variants, and a short exploded-view sequence from that one build. The variants cost a fraction of the first image, which is the only reason the campaign fit the budget.
The change that arrived too late. A client approved a lit test frame quickly, then asked to change a product's proportions after animation was complete. The geometry, the materials, the lighting check, and the full render all had to be redone. The same request during model review would have been a short conversation. It is now a standing rule on our projects that the model gets a proper sign-off of its own.
